Reaction Steps

3-Bromopropanol (10.75 g, 0.075 mol) is added over 20 minutes to a solution of 2-bromopropionylbromide (17.9 g, 0.079 mol) in toluene (75 ml) while keeping the temperature between 15-20° C. The mixture is stirred for 6 h at room temperature and is then poured under vigorous stirring into 1M solution of Na2CO3 (80 ml). The organic layer is separated, washed with water (3×50 ml), dried over MgSO4 and evaporated to afford 19.75 g of the title compound as a colorless oil.
