Reaction Steps
A solution of methyl (E)-6-(4-t-butyldimethylsilyloxy-1,3-dihydro-6- ethyl-7-methyl-3-oxoisobenzofuran-5-yl)-4-methyl-4-hexenoate (10.6 g) in methylene chloride (150 ml), methanol (150 ml), and pyridine (5 ml) was treated with an excess of ozone at -70° C. The reaction was quenched with dimethylsulfide (20 ml) and stirred for 5 hours at 25° C. The reaction mixture was poured into 1N aqueous sodium hydrogen mullets. Extraction with 1:1 ethyl acetate:hexane gave an oil which on purification by silica gel chromatography gave 2-(4-t-butyldimethylsilyloxy-1,3-dihydro-6-ethyl-7-methyl-3-oxoisobenzofuran-5-yl)-acetaldehyde, m.p. 90.9°-91.6° C.
