A mixture of 3-butyryl-4-chloro-8-(2-methylthioethoxy)quinoline (2.75 g, 8.2 mmol) and 4-fluoro-2-methylaniline (1.34 g, 10.7 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 ml) was refluxed for 8 h. The solution was cooled and 1.52 g crystallized product was filtered off. The filtrate was evaporated and chromatographed (SiO2 ; CH2Cl2 :MeOH 95:5) yielding 0.4 g of the desired product. Total yield: 1.92 g (57%).
