5 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride dioxane were added to a solution of 540 mg of (R)-1-t-butoxycarbonyl-2-{2-[2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenoxymethyl}pyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 5 ml of dioxane, and the resulting solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 1 hour. At the end of this time, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was dried in vacuo, to give 456 mg (a quantitative yield) of the title compound as a colorless oil.
