Procedure

A solution of 2-phenylthiomethyl-4-propyl-5-ethyl-1,2,5-thiadiazolidin-3-one 1, 1-dioxide (3.97 g) and sulfuryl chloride (1.47 ml) in 80 ml of methylene chloride was stirred for 3 hours at room temperature. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue triturated in hexane. The solvent was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by flash chromatography (silica gel) to afford 2.4 g (77%) of 2-chloromethyl-4-propyl-5-ethyl-1,2,5-thiadiazolidin-3-one 1,1-dioxide (Formula II: R1 =H; R2 =propyl; R3 =ethyl; X'=Cl) as an oil.
