Procedure
1-[2-(4-Aminomethylphenoxy)ethyl]imidazole (1.1 g) was heated on a steam bath for 2 hours in a mixture of acetic acid (10 ml) and acetic anhydride (1 ml). The solution was then evaporated and the residue was dissolved in a small volume of water. The solution was made basic with sodium bicarbonate and the resulting solid was filtered off, washed with water and crystallised from water to give 1-[2-(4-acetylaminomethylphenoxy)ethyl]imidazole (0.70 g), m.p. 115°-166° C. Found: C, 60.45; H, 6.72; N, 15.35. C14H17N3O2.H2O requires: C, 60.63; H, 6.91; N, 15.15%.
