Ethyl chloroformate (10.0 g, 90 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 1-benzyl-3,5-dimethyl-4-piperidinone (5.0 g, 24 mmol) in benzene (20 ml), refluxed with stirring for 6 hr and concentrated to dryness to give 1-carbethoxy-3,5-dimethyl-4-piperidinone as oil. Yield 4.51 g (90%), C10H17NO3, m/z 200 (M+1).
