Procedure
4-(1-Benzofuran-3-yl-ethyl)-1-trityl-1H-imidazole (Intermediate I4) (0.52 g) in acetic acid (10 mL) and water (5 mL) was heated to reflux for 1 h. The mixture was cooled to rt and the pH was adjusted with 2M NaOH until basic. The aqueous layer was extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layers were combined, dried over MgSO4 and filtered through paper. The solvent was removed under a vacuum. The residue was purified by chromatography on silical gel with 2.5% NH3-MeOH: CH2Cl2 to give 4-(1-benzofuran-3-yl-ethyl)-1H-imidazole Intermediate I5) 0.29 g.
