Procedure

Raney nickel 2800 (2.5 g) was added to a degassed solution of the unsaturated ester 59 (2.5 g) in MeOH (50.0 mL) and the resulting suspension was treated with hydrogen at atmospheric pressure for 18 h. The suspension was filtered over a Celite® bed and concentrated. Flash chromatography (30-50% ethyl acetate in hexane containing 1% acetic acid) of the resulting residue gave the desired saturated ester 60 (2.2 g, 98%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): 12.63 (s, 1H), 7.31 (dd, J=7.6 and 1.6 Hz, 1H), 7.21 (m, 3H), 7.08 (m, 2H), 6.85 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 2H), 6.77 (d, J=7.6 Hz, 1H), 4.06 (m, 1H), 3.55 (s, 3H), 3.0 (m, 1H), 2.84 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 2H) 2.76 (m, 1H) 2.61 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 1.31 (s, 9H)
