A solution of ethyl 2-(3-bromo-4-nitro-1H-indazol-1-yl)acetate (1.48 g, 4.51 mmol) in absolute EtOH (20 mL) was treated at ambient temperature with hydrazine (1.45 g, 45.1 mmol) and was heated at reflux for 16 hours under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture was cooled to ambient temperature, and the precipitate was isolated by filtration. The solids were dried under vacuum to afford the product (0.865 g) as a tan powder.
