To a vigorously stirred solution of 69 (2 g, 5.4 mmol) in methanol (60 mL) under nitrogen was added Pd/C (10% wet, 0.5 g). The mixture was stirred 2 h at room temperature under an atmosphere of hydrogen then the pressure was released and the mixture was filtered through a pad of silica gel. The solvent was removed and the residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, 2:1:0.2 chloroform/ethanol/concentrated ammonium hydroxide) to provide 70 (1.18 g, 92%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 1.32 (m, 2H), 1.54 (m, 2H), 2.55 (m, 2H), 3.45 (m, 2H), 3.82 (m, 3H), 3.94 (m, 2H), 6.83 (d, 2H), 7.08 (d, 2H).
