MnO2 (1.82 g, 20.95 mmol) is added to a solution of (3-chloro-pyrazin-2-yl)-pyridin-3-yl-methanol (929 mg, 4.19 mmol) in toluene (35 ml), and the reaction heated at reflux for 2 hours. The reaction is allowed to cool to room temperature and filtered through a pad of celite, which is washed with toluene. The solvent is removed in vacuo to afford (3-Chloro-pyrazin-2-yl)-pyridin-3-yl-methanone as a pale brown solid which is used in step 3 with no further purification [M+H]+ 220.
