Condensation of phthalic anhydride and m-(dimethylamino)acetanilide by the method of part A of Example 1 affords 2-(2-acetamido-4-(dimethylamino)benzoyl)benzoic acid (II: Y'2 = CH3CONH, Y'4 = (CH3)2N, Z4 = Z'5 = Z'6 = Z7 = H).
