Reaction Steps

To 35 ml of freshly distilled dichloromethane was added 1.98 ml of boron tribromide. The reaction mixture was placed in a water bath. To the reaction mixture was added a solution of 1.1 g (3.5 mmol) of 5 in 15 ml of dichloromethane dropwise. The mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature (23-26° C.) for 30 minutes and poured into 50 g of ice/water. An additional 50 ml of water was added and extracted with 3×100 ml of chloroform. The combined organic layer was dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to give 1.2 g (3.18 mmol, 90%) of 6 as an off-white solid.
