Reaction Steps
2,4-Di(benzyloxycarbonyl)butyl(phenethyl)phosphinic acid (1.1 g, 2.2 mmol) in 20 mL of water containing 120 mg of 10% Pd/C was hydrogenated on a Parr hydrogenator at 40 psi overnight. Filtration through a Celite pad followed by evaporation on high vacuum gave 0.8 g (114%) of 2-[(phenethylhydroxyphosphinyl)methyl]pentanedioic acid (4, R=CH2CH2Ph) as a white solid.
