Reaction Steps

A solution of 2-(3-Carbamoyl-phenoxy)-N-(2-chloro-benzyl)-nicotinic acid ethyl ester (4.31 grams, 16.08 mmole) in ethanol (100 ml) and 1 N sodium hydroxide (40.21 ml) was refluxed for 4 hours. The mixture was concentrated to 1/3 volume, diluted to 300 ml with water, acidified to pH 3 with 1 N hydrochloric acid and filtered to isolate a white solid which was recrystalized from ethyl acetate/hexane (3.8 g). M.P. 220-224° C.; Anal. calcd. for C13H10N2O4: C, 60.45; H, 3.91; N, 10.85. Found: C, 61.70; H, 3.61; N, 10.69.
