Procedure

A solution of product from Step H (3.79 g, 16.7 mmol), sodium acetate (2.44 g, 29.7 mmol), acetic acid (1.82 mL, 31.9 mmol), and formaldehyde (37% in water, 15.1 mL) was heated to reflux for 96 hours. The reaction was slowly neutralized by the addition of sat. aq. NAHCO3. The aqueous layer was extracted with methylene chloride (5×50 mL). The combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (1→10% MeOH/CHCl3) to provide the title compound as a white solid.
