Procedure
5-phenyl-iminomethyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.25 g) is hydrogenated in 100 ml of ethanol with addition of Raney nickel at normal pressure and a temperature of 25° C. Taking up of 1 mol of hydrogen takes about 40 minutes. The residue remaining after filtering of the catalyst and evaporation of the filtrate is chromatographed on silica gel with a mixture of 10 parts of dichloromethane and one part of ethanol. Thus, 0.15 g of phenylaminomethyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester is obtained.
