Following the procedure of Step B of Example 1 but substituting the product from Step B of this example for 4-methoxy-gamma-oxobenzenebutanoic acid there was obtained 4-hydroxy-alpha,alpha-dimethyl-gamma-oxobenzenebutanoic acid, methyl ester.
