Reaction Steps
2.36 g (7.5 mmol) of the compound from Example VII are dissolved in 20 ml of anhydrous dimethylformamide, and the mixture is treated with 0.28 g (9.4 mmol) of 80% strength sodium hydride under a gentle stream of argon. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 15 min and treated with 1.54 g (9 mmol) of benzyl bromide. After 60 min, 30 ml of water are cautiously added and the mixture is extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases are washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated to dryness in vacuo. The residue which remains is chromatographed in a column (φ 3 cm) on 50 g of silica gel 230-400 mesh using petroleum ether/ethyl acetate 4:1.
