Procedure
A solution of potassium peroxymonosulphate (17.7 g) in water (30 ml) was added to a mixture of 3-bromophenyl 2-naphthyl sulphide (3 g) and ethanol (30 ml) which had been cooled to 0° C. in an ice-bath. The mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 18 hours and at 60° C. for 5 hours. The mixture was cooled to ambient temperature and partitioned between chloroform and water. The organic phase was dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give 3-bromophenyl 2-naphthyl sulphone (2.7 g, 82%) as a solid which was used without further purification.
