A mixture of 170 parts of ethyl cis-3-(phenylmethoxy)-4-[(phenylmethyl)amino]-1-piperidinecarboxylate and 400 parts of methanol was hydrogenated at normal pressure and at 80° C. with 20 parts of palladium-on-charcoal catalyst 10%. After the calculated amount of hydrogen was taken up, the catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated. The oily residue was distilled, yielding 75 parts of ethyl cis-4-amino-3-hydroxy-1-piperidinecarboxylate; bp. 175°-185° C. at 0.4 mm. pressure. (intermediate 49).
