Procedure
A suspension of the diacid 2 (689 mg, 4.05 mmol) from Example 1 in freshly distilled acetic anhydride (7 ml) was heated for 4 hours at 100° C. The majority of acetic anhydride was removed by distillation and the remainder was removed under a stream of nitrogen leaving a residue which was distilled (170°-175° C. at 1 mm Hg) giving the desired anhydride 3 (175 mg, 28%) as an oil which crystallized on standing: mp 50°-51° C.; Anal. calcd for C8H8O3 : C, 63.15; H, 5.30. Found: C, 62.91; H, 5.43.
