Reaction Steps
6.8 g of the biphenyl derivative prepared under 4.2, 10.5 g of methacrylic acid, 0.5 g of p-toluenesulfonic acid and 0.5 g of hydroquinone as an inhibitor are dissolved in 100 ml of CHCl3 and the solution is refluxed for about 20 hours, using a water separator. It is then taken up in 100 ml of ether, washed several times with saturated Na2CO3 solution (until the aqueous phase no longer shows a coloration) and dried with Na2SO4, and the solvent is stripped off. The crude product is recrystallized from ethanol. Phase transitions k 42.5 s 49 i.
