To a solution of 4.96 g. of 1-iodo-3-triphenylmethoxy-trans-1-octene (Example 24) in 10 ml. of toluene cooled to -78° C. is added under an inert atmosphere 1 molar equivalent of n-butyllithium dissolved in hexane. The reaction mixture is allowed to warm to -40° C. and is then maintained at that temperature for 1 hour to yield a hydrocarbon solution of 3-triphenylmethoxy-trans-1-octenyllithium.
