Reaction Steps

A mixture of 3-[3-nitro-4-(phenethyloxy)phenyl]-1,1-dimethylurea (5.8 g; 0.0175 mol), 5% palladium in BaSO4 catalyst (6.0 g) and 95% ethyl alcohol (100 ml) is shaken in a hydrogen atmosphere at 2.8 kg/cm2 pressure (40 psig) for 18 hours. The mixture is then filtered and the ethanol removed under vacuum. The residue is washed with toluene to afford the title compound, m.p. 125°-126° C.
