Reaction Steps
5-4 (43.5 mg, 0.145 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of potassium hydroxide (85% by weight, 25.4 mg, 0.384 mmol) in water (2.1 mL). After degassing the resulting solution with nitrogen, 10% Pd/C (22 mg) was added and the mixture was stirred under a hydrogen filled balloon. After 4.5 h, the mixture was filtered through celite, washing the cake with water. The filtrate was acidified with 3N KHSO4 and evaporated in vacuo. The solids were extracted with 10% methanol/chloroform (30 mL), removing the undissolved inorganic solids by filtration and the filtrate was evaporated in vacuo to give 5-5 as a glass: 1H NMR (CD3OD): selected signals δ 2.21 (d, J=1.1 Hz, 3H, CH3), 6.59 (q, J=1.1 Hz, 1H, pyrazinone-5).
