2,4-Di(benzyloxycarbonyl)butyl(3-phenylpropyl)phosphinic acid (15) (1.4 g, 2.8 mmol) in 20 mL of water containing 150 mg of 10% Pd/C was hydrogenated on a Parr hydrogenator at 40 psi overnight. Filtration through a Celite pad followed by evaporation on high vacuum gave 0.8 g (89%) of 2-[(3-phenylpropylhydroxyphosphinyl)methyl]pentanedioic acid (4, R=CH2CH2CH2Ph)as a light yellow viscous oil).
