Procedure

To a solution of Intermediate 18 (1.0314 g, 3.22 mmol) in 7.3 mL CCl4 was added N-bromosuccinimide (0.5827 g) and a catalytic amount of benzoyl peroxide. The reaction was heated to 60° C. overnight. The solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was taken up in ethyl acetate, washed with water and brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated to an orange oil (0.8654 g, 2.17 mmol), which was used in the next step without further purification.
