Procedure
2-carbamoyl-4H-pyrido[3,2,1-jk]carbazole-4-one (350 mg) produced in Example 174 was suspended in conc. nitric acid (13 ml), and sodium nitrite (1.84 g) was added to the suspension in an ice bath. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours, and water was added to the reaction mixture. The crystals precipitated were recovered by filtration, and washed with methanol and ether in succession to obtain the title compound (300 mg, 85%).
