The procedure of Example 53 is repeated with cis-3-(2-fluorophenyl)-1-methyl-4-piperidinol and 4-fluorophenol to yield trans-3-(2-fluorophenyl)-4-(4-fluorophenoxy)-1-methylpiperidine. This compound is treated with a solution of fumaric acid in ether containing ethanol to yield trans-4-(4-fluorophenoxy)-3-(2-fluorophenyl)-1-methylpiperidine fumarate, m.p. 205.5°-206.5° C. The crude salt is recrystallized from isopropanol to afford colorless crystals, m.p. 205.5°-206.5.
