A mixture of 4-chloro-1-(dimethoxymethyl)-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzene (18; 3.20 g, 12.6 mmol), Pd2(dba)3 (0.30 g, 0.33 mmol), t-BuOK (3.50 g, 31.2 mmol) and morpholine (48; 1.09 g, 12.6 mmol) in anhydrous toluene (50 mL) was stirred under reflux for 12 h under an inert atmosphere of nitrogen. Upon cooling to room temperature, the mixture was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by chromatography (petroleum ether:ethyl acetate=10:1) to give 4-(4-(dimethoxymethyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)morpholine 19 (0.40 g, 10.4%).
