A mixture containing ethyl 4,5-diaminonicotinate (79; 0.9 g, 5 mmol) and 4-fluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde (82; 1.0 g, 5.2 mmol) in nitrobenzene (50 mL) was stirred at 220° C. for 18 h. Upon cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was diluted with ether. The resulting solids were collected by filtration, washed with ether, and dried to provide 2-(4-fluoro-2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-3H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridine-7-carboxylic acid ethyl ester 83 (600 mg, 39%).
