Procedure
A solution of 3.11 g of ethyl (S)-11,12,13,13a-tetrahydro-9-oxo-9H-imidazo[1,5-a]pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepine-1-carboxylate in a mixture of 10 ml of 98 percent nitric acid and 15 ml of 98 percent sulphuric acid is heated to 100° for 6 hours. Subsequently, the mixture is cooled to room temperature, poured onto ice, neutralized with about 25 percent ammonia and extracted with chloroform. The chloroform extracts are dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated. The residue is recrystallized from ethyl acetate and yields ethyl (S)-11,12,13,13a-tetrahydro-7-nitro-9-oxo-9H-imidazo[1,5-a]pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepine-1-carboxylate of melting point 193°-194°.
