(S)-4-(Chloromethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane (63; 3.3 g, 20.5 mmol) was added to a mixture containing 4-bromo-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol (126; 5 g, 20 mmol) and K2CO3 (8.30 g, 60 mmol) in 20 mL of DMF. The resulting reaction mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 6 h. Upon cooling to room temperature, the mixture was poured into water and extracted by EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by chromatography (petroleum ether:EtOAc=50:1) to afford (S)-4-((4-bromo-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy)methyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane (4 g, 56%).
