A solution of 56.5 mg (0.187 mmole) of 8-chloro-6-ethynyl-2-(trifluoromethyl)-2H-chromene-3-carboxylic acid in 1.5 mL of ethanol was treated with 1.85 mL of 0.1008N NaOH. The resultant mixture was lyophilized to provide 59 mg (quant.) of an off-white solid: 1H NMR (CD3OD/400 MHz) 5.97 (q, 1H, J=7.0 Hz), 7.31 (d, 1H, J=1.7 Hz), 7.39 (s, 1 H), 7.41 (d, 1H, J=1.9 Hz), the acetylenic proton exchanges under the basic conditions; MS (ES+) 303 (M+l, 100).
