Procedure

To a solution of 1,5-dichloro-2-(chloromethyl)-4-nitrobenzene (Hagmann, William K.; Dorn, Conrad P.; Frankshun, Robert A.; O'Grady, Laura A.; Bailey, Philip J.; et al.; JMCMAR; J. Med. Chem.; EN; 29; 8; 1986; 1436–1441, 10.6 g, 44 mmol) in methanol (30 ml) was added sodium methoxide (44 ml, 66 mmol) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 21 h. The volatile component was removed under reduced pressure, and the residue was extracted with ethyl acetate (100 ml). The organic layer was washed with water (50 ml), brine (50 ml), then dried (Na2SO4). After removal of solvent, the crude product was purified by flash column chromatography eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (6:1/4:1) to afford 2.8 g (27%) of the title compound as pale yellow oil.
