21.0 g (69.2 mmol) of 7-acetamido-1-(2-ethylbutyl)-2,3(1H,4H)-quinoxalinedione were dissolved in 250 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid and, at 0°-5° C., 7.0 g (69.2 mmol) of potassium nitrate were added a little at a time. The mixture was stirred for 1 h and a further 3.5 g (34.6 mmol) of potassium nitrate were added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 h. It was then poured into ice-water, and the precipitate was filtered off with suction and dried to yield 18.0 g (75%) of the product, which was immediately processed further.
