The process of this invention produces ammonium dinitramide by using a substrate compound that functions as a protected form of ammonia. It allows for introduction of two nitro groups on the ammonia nitrogen (in high yield) followed by treatment with ammonia to give ammonium dinitramide, ammonium nitrate, and regenerated starting compound.
