Procedure

A known compound, methyl α-D-lyxopyranoside [Compound (1)] of the formula ##STR8## is reacted with diethylaminosulfur trifluoride [(C2H5)2 NSF3 ] to fluorinate selectively only the 4-hydroxyl group of Compound (1), whereby there is produced methyl 4-deoxy-4-fluoro-α-L-ribopyranoside [Compound (2)] of the formula ##STR9## as a 4-deoxy-4-fluoro derivative of Compound (1), with accompanying reversion of the steric configuration of the starting compound.
