A 15N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (2 ml) and a solution (10 ml) of 8.0 g of undecyl bromide in ethanol was added to a solution (30 ml) of 4.56 g of 3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)propanol in ethanol and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 12 hours. The solvent was distilled away and the residue was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated sodium hydrogencarbonate and brine, and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled away and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate:hexane=1:20-1:3) to give 7.37 g of 3-(3-undecyloxyphenyl)propanol as a colorless, oily substance.
