Reaction Steps
To a solution of ethyl(2RS,3SR)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-oxoindane-2-carboxylate (3.0 g, 10.2 mmol) in DMF (10 ml) under an argon atmosphere were added imidazole (1.72 g, 25.3 mmol) and t-butyldimethylchloro-silane (1.82 g, 12.1 mmol). The resulting mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 3 d, then was poured into dilute aqueous HCl and extracted with EtOAc (2×). The combined organic extracts were washed successively with H2O, aqueous NaHCO3, H2O and saturated aqueous NaCl and dried. The solvent was removed in vacuo to provide the title compound (5.40 g) which was used without further purification.
