To a mixture of 2,2'-oxy-bis(ethylamine)dihydrochloride (1) (177 mg, 1 mmol), bromoethylamine hydrobromide (2) (204.9 mg, 1 mmol), in ethanol (10 mL) was added sodium methoxide (162.6 mg, 3 mmol) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 48 hours under a positive flow of argon. Reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, ethanol was evaporated on rotavapor and the crude product (135 mg) was directly taken into next step to prepare the bis-naphthalimide, compound 5.
