The product from step (i) (5 g) was heated under argon in gently refluxing diphenyl ether [15 g) for 2 1/2 hours. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and ether (70 ml) was added. The solid material was filtered and purified by flash chromatography on silica gel, eluting with methanol/dichloromethane (1/4 v/v) to give 2-allyl-4-[4-(4-pyridyl)piperazin-1-yl]phenol (0.88 g}as a solid, m.p. 180°-182° C.; NMR (d6 -DMSO) δ8.88(1H,s), 8.19(2H,dd), 6.87(2H,dd), 6.7(3H,m), 5.88-6.03(1H,m), 5.0(2H,m), 3.44(4H,t), 3.28(2H,d), 3.05(4H,t); m/e 296 (M+H)+.
