Reaction Steps

A reaction mixture of 12.5 g (54 mmol) of 2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-1-benzylimidazole and 9.3 g (54 mmol) of benzyl bromide was heated on a steam-bath with stirring for 1/4 h and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was triturated with ether/ethyl acetate and filtered to afford 17.3 g (79.8%) of 3-benzyl-2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-1-benzyl imidazolium bromide (Formula VI: A=1-benzylimidazole;Y=2-(1,3,-dioxolan-2-yl);R1 =R6 =H;Z- =Br-).
