Reaction Steps

A reaction mixture of 6.27 g (40.4 mmol) of 5-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole and 6.91 g (40.4 mmol) of benzyl bromide was heated on a steam-bath with stirring for 4 h. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, triturated with ether and decanted to afford 11.3 g (85.7%) of 4-benzyl-5-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazolium bromide (Formula VI: A=1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole; Y=5-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl);R1 =R6 =H;Z- =Br-).
