Reaction Steps

A reaction mixture of 19.3 g (104 mmol) of 1-butyl-2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)imidazole and 17.75 g (104 mmol) of benzyl bromide was stirred at room temperature for 24 h. The mixture was triturated with ethyl aceate, decanted and dried to afford 35.3 g of 3-benzyl-2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-1-butyl-imidazolium bromide (Formula VI: A=1-butylimidazole; Y=2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl); R1 =R6 =H; Z- =Br-).
