Reaction Steps
A solution of 1.5 g. (0.067 mole) of 4-oxo-1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,4,5,6,-tetrahydrocyclopenta[c]pyrrole, described above in Example 10, and 254 mg. (0.0067 mole) of sodium borohydride in 15 ml. of ethanol was stirred for 16 hours at 0°-5° C., then for an additional eight hours at ambient temperature and poured into ice/water. The mixture was extracted with ether, and the ether extracts were dried and evaporated to dryness to give 4-hydroxy-1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,4,5,6-tetrahydrocyclopenta[c]pyrrole as an oil.
