Procedure
o-Toluoyl chlorides may be prepared by reacting 3,5-dinitro-4-chloro-o-toluic acid with phosphorus pentachloride. The resulting o-toluoyl chloride is then treated with ammonia in cold acetone to yield the corresponding 3,5-dinitro-4-chloro-o-toluamide which is converted to the corresponding nitrile by reaction with phosphorus pentoxide or preferably with POCl3.
