Reaction Steps

To a solution of 0.35 part of 2-(2-azido-1-ethoxyethylideneamino)-5-chlorobenzophenone produced in Step (2) in 10 parts by volume of ethanol is added 2 parts by volume of Raney nickel washed sufficiently with ethanol. The mixture is refluxed for 25 minutes and filtered to remove the Raney nickel. The filtrate is evaporated under reduced pressure and 7-chloro-2-ethoxy-5-phenyl-3H-1,4-benzodiazepine is obtained as an oily substance.
